How do I extract fine details from a photo

I know how to use the extract tool but sometimes I cannot get all the finer details such as strands of hair or whiskers, how can this be accomplished so you can extract most of the fine details.

Is this with respect to copying a section of the image and then enlarging it?

If so, assumming the resolution is real fine on the slide, then increasing the resolution of the of the image before it is opened in photoshop should allow you to take the hair or, for that matter, any part of the image, enlarge it and still come up with finer details.

What I'm trying to say is the more pixels you have that match the original image, the better the detail.

In photography, the distances between the light sensitive crystals effect the details of the image.

I think, if you don't mind me saying, you've misunderstood the original question. What I took it to mean is how do you mask and select part of the image when it contains very fine details. You can't draw round each strand of hair with the mask tool and the magic wand won't work well enough. I would also like to know the answer to that one. Somebody did tell me once but I think it was quite complex.

I have read the responses so far and am amazed that not one of them mentions the tool that gives you the most control over your selection. The Pen tool. It is the best (if not the only) tool that will give you the ability to select the fine detail you are looking for.

Another possible way (depending on the original image) of masking the fine detail is using Channels. I will not take the time to go thru it here but if you are interested you might want to find a book called "Photoshop Channel CHOPS", New Riders Publishing. It is not a new book (last copyright was 1998) but almost the entire book is relevant in the current version of Photoshop.

channel chops is a GREAT book!!! it really teaches you how to do things without the use of plugins etc. I only wish that it had a cd with some of the images to work with.
