De-Screen a Scan (or no more Moire!)

I have an Epson 3170 Photo Scanner. In the old days there were choices of adjustments that could be made in the interface with PhotoShop, so I could, for example, de-screen a preprinted photo. But now it's hit the button and go. I have to scan a preprinted photo at 600 dpi, @130% (for use on a billboard.) What settings/changes can I make in photoshop that will allow me to de-screen?
Thanks,
Peggy

Try Filter>Noise>Despeckle

The traditional way if the scanner software doesn't have a descreen function was:

1. Scan at 2 or 3 times required output res. (Some say rotating the original on the scanner helps)

2. Despeckle or Gaussian blur

3. Reduce to output res.

4. Unsharp mask

I'm surprised your scanner software doesn't have descreening.

You don't have to just "hit the button" on the Epson. You can import it into PS via File -> Import.

You need to go to File>import>Epson 3170 and then set your user tab to professional and you can then set to descreen!

And when you run the blur, zoom up to 200% and adjust the filter right up to, but not past, the point of mushing the dot.

Then when you run USM, increase the threshold so that you don't resharpen the dots.

the Epson 3170 scanner software comes with a built-in Descreening Filter:

Yes I saw that too. As I said, Peggy should import the file and NOT hit the button on the scanner.

Hope she reads this!
