CS2 Text question

I've used CS2 for a couple of months and seem to be finding my way around in it okay except for one troubling situation.

Sometimes when I need to insert text into a finished JPEG after having converted from .NEF I can do it without a problem. Other times when I attempt the same action I'll move the typing tool into the photo and click it and a small square appears with no vertical index line. I have found that nothing can be typed when this occurs.

I have looked back at the ones where I succeeded in typing text to see if there is any difference between the way I processed those images and the ones where I cannot enter text. I can't see any difference.

What am I missing here?

Why are you using jpegs?
What have you done with the orginal raw files?
Do you understand the use of layers?
Do you understand the use of the psd format to save images? If you add text to an image and save it as a jpeg that text and that image are permanently mated. Therefore it would seem better to work in layers, each instance of text being added as its own layer, and save in the psd format so that you can later access the image without the text if you so choose.

have u tried rather than just clicking, to click and drag a text box into a fixed size rectangle? this box can be resized using the type tool at any time to accommodate the size and shape of final text, but perhaps it might be a way to 'insist' to the software that it complies with your seemingly reasonable request?

i suspect possibly what is happening when u click is some kind of error is occurring which makes a tiny fixed size text box, too small to actually insert any characters into? hence the little box you describe with no cursor line flashing

ps - the fact that its a jpeg shouldnt make the slightest difference when adding new text, as PS automatically creates a new vector layer for the text to be in - an exception to this rule can be indexed colour pictures such as gifs: just make the mode RGB and then proceed normally

LOL - it's a style thing, and certain people who provide otherwise good information here are known for it. I call it "amplifying the premise". For example, if you ask someone where the museum of modern art is, they may reply that modern art isn't worth a darn, and you should go to the Tate Gallery, or whatever, and see some "real" painting.

To get back to your original question, the most likely things to check are the size of the font you are using, and the color of the text.

As to whether you prefer jpg or whatever format, that's your business. --

Funnily enough Padraig, despite using Photoshop since version 6, I have always used the method mentioned by pohutakawa of drawing out a text box with the text tool! and never even realised it was possible to just click on the image with the text tool! So I have been busily experimenting to see if I can recreate the problem you have! and no I can't! I get a pulsing line appears each time, regardless of the font size chosen or even the font chosen!
But for what it is worth I shall now be using your method, as it seems slightly more efficient than my old method!

lol glad to help! this only works in photoshop however, indesign and illustrator both require the text area to be drawn

Padraig,

I'd guess that the problem is with you "mousing." If you drag, even a little, the Text Tool will create a Text Box. If it is too small to hold the Text, that you wish to type (could be Font, or maybe just Leading, etc. in the Character Palette setting), you will see nothing. Click, with NO movement to the mouse/stylus, and you should get the "I-Beam" to type, with no respect to the area that the type will occupy. Depending on the settings of your mouse, you may need to hold it VERY still, and do not hic-cup! <G>
