Damaged or truncated file

Ocassionally when I try to load a file (JPEG), usually one I have opened before, I will get the message, File may be damaged, truncated or incomplete. And the file when opened anyway, will be half a picture. I am assuming that when I saved it, something happened. What am I doing wrong?

Unlikely that you are doing anything wrong, Charles, but it is likely that you have either a hard drive , drive cabling or drive controller problems.

Suggest you run a complete surface scan on the drive that is showing these problems.

Thanks. I did check and there were some problems which could have been the cause. Corrected those and now I will wait and see. I certainly hope that corrected the problem permanently, I'd hate to lose any more pictures. I always like the old DOS Check Disk because you could see where and what the problems were and mark those sections off as bad areas. I suppose Windows has a 'better' way of dealing with those but it is less visable to me.

Scandisk with surface check will mark bad sectors as unusable if no data there, tries to repair data on bad sector.

Of course, if you are developing bad sectors over time, your HD or disk controller (or something) is failing.
