Nikon D70

I have aquired A Nikon D70 and the pictures in
raw format are *.NEF. This file type is listed
in the PhotoShop cs when you click on open/filetypes
it is in the raw format list.

However I receive a message saying

"Could not complete your request because
it is not the right kind of document."

I have downloaded the latest rawfile download
from Adobe. This download specified the Nikon D2H
was included, nothing about the D70.

When I click on the list of supported raw formats,
both the D2H and the D70 is listed with a red "New" next to the D70.

Is there another update? Am I doing something else wrong? The software works on every other format I have samples
from, but none of those are raw.

Thanks

Don

Did you get and install the updated ACR plugin?
#2
Don,

I understand that you have to delete your old ACR file.

Start> Program Files> Adobe> Photoshop CS> Plugins> File Formats

After you have deleted the Camera Raw file there, open your new downloaded file and unzip it.

If you can't unzip it to this folder, then do so to your desktop and drag the file to the folder.

You'll need to re-open Photoshop CS before the NEF files will be accessible.

rather than fully deleting the former camera raw plugin, simply inactivate it by put a tilde ( ~ ) in front of the plugin name. That way if you ever wish to reactivate it, you only need to remove the ~ .

Thanks for the quick responses.

I downloaded yesterday, July 31st. I moved cameraraw.8bi to another directory, unzipped the downloaded file and put it in the c:\programfiles\adobe\adobe photoshop cs\plug ins\file formats directory.

the new file is cameraraw.8bi 4,347kb 1/30/2004
the old file was cameraraw.8bi 3,964kb 10/13/2003

I restarted photoshop with the same result. Same message.

Did I get the right file? Is there a newer version? Any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm not sure, but I vaguely remember some issue with Nikon's proprietory NEF-converter installed while using the Photoshop raw converter.

If I stumble into something about it, I'll post it.

What is it with Nikon? Are they writing code on another planet? It seems every new thing they come out with has issues on both Mac and Windows platforms.

What gives with these guys?

Just for a reference point - I use the complete cadre of Nikon software (including the latest versions of View and Capture) + Photoshop without any problems. Photoshop opens my NEF files just fine.

I don't have any problems using the PSCS NEF converter with my D70 images. BUT, I *do* have Nikon Capture on my system too.

OH WAIT!! Don, I remember, there are TWO locations for the Nikon camera raw converter that you need to disable/deactivate in order for the PSCS camera raw plugin to work ... lemme think ... lemme look ... just a sec ...

Here it is! Have you deactivated the copy in this path:

\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats

Grasshopper -

There was no 'cameraraw.8bi' in \Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats, but I put a copy there after your posting. It didn't matter. same result.

I'm open to other suggestions.

Don,

Grasshopper was referring to any Nikon plug-ins that might be in that folder, such as those that get installed by Nikon Capture or Nikon Viewer. If you see anything with the Nikon name on it in there, try putting a ~ in front of it and see if that helps.

The files in \Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats are cameraraw.8bi 1/30/2004 (I put it there)
cineon.8bi 10/11/2003
gif.8bi same date
png.8bi same date
WBMP.8bi same date

Nothing looks to me like a Nikon file.

Hey Guys -

I found the problem. I didn't get the latedt cameraraw.8bi when I downloaded yesterday, I went on adobe.com today and forund a newer update and it solved the problem. Thanks for your efforts.

Glad to hear that you figured it out, Don.

FWIW, I do not have Nikon Capture on my computer. I do, however, use Nikon files from time to time and having the new Adobe Camera RAW file is sufficient.

I'm having a similar problem. Only about half of the tools are displaying when I open a raw image in Photoshop.

The Camera Raw window is opening with only about half the tools on the right of the window and none of the tools at the bottom.

I can't maximize or minimize the window either.

What can I do?

Willis,

You probably missed it, but there's a whole sub-forum here devoted to Camera Raw. It's right at the top of the main list of threads for this forum.

Concerning your problem, I'll quote Thomas Knoll, from that forum:

"To open Nikon D70 images using Adobe Camera Raw, you need to:

1. Download and install the Adobe Camera Raw 2.2 update from Adobe's website.

2. Delete from Photoshop's plug-in folder and all subfolders all copies of the "Nikon NEF plugin". Nikon installs this plug-in in up to two places inside Photoshop's plug-in folder, and both most be deleted. Otherwise it overrides the Adobe plug-in."

(If you feel uncomfortable with deleting the Nikon plugin from your Photoshop folder, just rename it to something else. That way you can easily go back to where you were, if necessary.)
