How to create a line break with Compaq Presario laptop

This is actually a solution to an old problem posted in the archives.

When using Photoshop (I'm using CS) on a Compaq Presario laptop, you cannot use the Enter key to create a line break when using the Type tool. I discovered you can use the following key combination to create a line break instead:

Hold down both the Fn and Alt keys, and type MMJL

After releasing the keys, you'll have a line break.

Why this combination?

Ordinarily, you can generate a carriage return by holding down the Alt key and typing 0015 on the numeric keypad. However, the laptop doesn't have a numeric keypad, so you have to hold down the Fn key and type MMJL, which corresponds to 0015. In addition, you have to hold down the Alt key to make this sequence work as a carriage return.

Hope this helps someone else!

Haven't you got NumLk and little numerals under the keys 789uiojklm?

I have!

Yes, using the Num Lk feature, you can also generate a line break by typing: Fn+Scroll, Hold down Alt key and press MMJL, Fn+Scroll

I find it easier to use the Fn+Alt combination plus MMJL, because I tend to forget to turn off the Num Lock, but many people would probably prefer your method. Thanks for the info!

Whichever method is used, it's a good way to simulate an Enter key on the Presario notebooks. Even though the key is marked Enter on our keyboards, it seems to be mapped as a Return key instead.

return gives you a new line within the text. enter commits the text.

Thanks for catching my blooper!

The Enter key on the laptop works as it should--it commits the text. We need to use the alternative sequence to create a line break cuz the laptop does not have a Return key!

Hopefully, I finally have it right!
