Hi I’m new to Photoshop CS2 so appologise for what is probably a remedial question, my problem is when I am working with 2 or more layers I cannot for the life of me find out how to resize the active layer without messing up the whole image and don’t want to have to drop back into PSP to sort it as I am enjoying PS.

Can you provide more info? What exactly is happening? What do you mean "messing up the whole image?"

You don’t resize the layer, you resize the content. Choose ‘Select all’, then choose ‘Edit – Transform – Scale’.

Click on the layer you want to resize, hit Ctrl-T, drag the handles to resize
(hold down Shift to constrain proportions, Alt to resize from the middle) Did you select more than one layer?
