Using PS 7.0. Copied layer and changed blend mode to multiply. Area with too much flash is more enhanced. Painting with black with 100% opacity. Selecting merge visible after that. Doesn’t work. Still looks just like it was "painted black". Suggestions? I’m having a hard time searching for this problem.

Don’t know your problem directly but you might want to try to use curves. go to image>adjust>curves. then drag the upper-most node down (RGB) or the lower-most node up (CMYK).
