dumb question - making circle

I'm sorry, I can't figure this out - I need to make a simple hollow circle. I've got the circle tool, but it makes a solid circle. I want the circle but white inside, a black lined circle, hollow. I'm sure it's somethign simple I'm missing here but I don't have a lot of time and can't waste any more time trying to research what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make circle, fill with any solid color. Use the border tool in BLACK. Select the 'center' and delete.

You might just try looking at the help file for circle. Something as easy as that has to be learnt from a bit of self help - sorry

An easier way is to use the marquee tool, drag the elliptical marquee tool using the shift key to keep it round and then add a stroke (edit > Stroke) with the required amount of pixels.

I have just tried with my copy of CS and I have a custom shape tool that is exactly as you are requiring!!
With that all you do is create a new layer, draw out your custom shape as required, the shape becomes a work path, click on the paths palette and select the fill path with foreground colour button!! (having made sure your foreground colour is the one you want!!)
Only thing is that I did once download some custom shapes from Adobe exchange - so it may be from there, or it may be part of the Photoshop setup?

If you don't have it send me an email, and I will send my custom shape file (.csh)

Obviously I did that, as I wrote in my original post, hence my coming in here for help. But thanks for wasting everyone's time with a completely pointless reply.

I tried this but using the marquee tool doesn't give me a "stroke" option in edit. It's grayed out. it doesn't recognize this as an object, but rather a tool to cut something.

I went into help and put "border tool" and it shows everything but what a border tool is. I'm totally lost. I could have sworn I was able to simply make a hollow cirlce with the ellisp tool before and I for the life of me can't figure out how to do it. Thanks.

yeah, then you can't edit it later.

Use the Ellipse Shape tool with the Shift key to constrain it, take the fill down to 0%, and stroke that puppy with layer effects.

You're limited to a gradient stroke, and something that doesn't look like a real media brush, but it works for a simple hollow circle.

we've all been there - want to do something that appears to be so simple and spend hours over it - that's what newsgroups are for.
Anyway the first thing to do is create a new layer then follow unspams instructions - the stroke option will be there. After you have your circle use Ctr & D to remove the dotted line.
