Changing a color to transparency

I have scanned a tusch drawing as line art, so I have the black drawing on a white background.
Now, I want to make the background transparent and the black drawing red.
Can someone help me (I am a newbie)

go to mode>duotone
change ink to red
to make transparency, doubleclick background layer to change name and make it editable
add layer mask (bottem of layers pallet)
use magic wand to select background
edit>fill...black9

And using magig wand is not possible, because there are hundreds of small islands of background color inside the drawing.

what mode is the picture in?
as far as the magic wand, if you uncheck the box at the top that says "continuous",
it should pick up all of those islands

also, what version of ps are you using?
if it makes any difference i am using ps7
i was able to achieve the affect you asked for using a scanned pencil drawing

In order to change the image into duotone, it must first be grayscale.

Don't use the magic wand to select colors. It's a crude tool only suited to newbies; as soon as oyu start to learn anything about Photoshop, you quickly abandon it. Instead, sample the white with the eyedropper, click on the Select menu, and use the Color Range command. This selects everything everywhere that is the same color as whatever you clicked on with the eyedropper.
