Is there a technique for removing sundogs, othen than time-consuming cloning?

Not really. Except by shooting with the sun to either side or behind you. A larger lens hood will help - cone shaped and painted matt black on the inside. This is actually lens flare. Some can be quite beautiful. Photoshop even has a filter where you can apply it...

Uh, sun dogs have absolutely nothing to do with a camera lens. They are an atmospheric phenonema. They are very tiny ice crystals floating in the atmosphere where sunlight then reflects off them at about 20 degrees on either side of the sun when it's low in the sky and the temperature is really low. Maybe try zooming in or shooting earlier or later then you did. Just a thought.
