I just installed CS today and it when very smoothly. I used it a couple of times without making any changes, but now when I open it I get this error message:
Adobe Photoshop: Photoshop.exe -- Unable to load component...this application failed to start because it cannot find scratchremoval.dll.
When I click OK to close the error window, CS continues to load. I rebooted hoping it would go away, but I still get the error. I was a good girl and even did a fresh reboot before install and turned off AV software, etc.
Using Windows XP, 512 MB RAM, Pentium M processor.

Are you launching Photoshop from the Start menu, or from where the program installed itself, that is from the HD:\program files\adobe\photoshop cs?
If the executable is dragged from it's installed location, weird things can happen.

Any 3rd- party plugins installed? If so, remove them and see what happens. NOTE: 3rd-party plug-ins that worked in Photoshop 7 may NOT work in Photoshop CS!

moving plugins from one version to another is a bad idea. 1) you may copy some ps 7 only plugins to overwrite the cs versions, 2) some won't work unless they're installed properly. always best to install plugs from their installers, or better yet, install them in a neutral location (like "c:\DavesPSPlugins") that way you just point to it as a secondary plugin folder in your prefrences.

I also have Photoshop Elements installed, but I don't recall a scratchremoval plugin, but it's possible. Most of the plugins I have are in a separate folder on C: drive so I can use them fro other software. I will check that out for sure.
Meanwhile, I think I will try the standard fix-all (hold down CTRL+ALT+SHIFT when starting) and restore preferences.
I'll report back.

Resetting preferences did the trick.
Before, I did point the prefs under the Plugins & Scratch disks to my C:\Plug-ins folder. I forgot about that until you mentioned it.
I did a search on C: for the this scratchremoval.dll, but it's not present except for this thread in IE's history. :)
Very strange. Hopefully it went away for good when I reset the prefs(cross fingers...knock on wood).

Well...the problem came back after I pointed to my plugins folder again. I did find however, find the culprit! It was a Polaroid Dust & Scratch Removal plug-in (2002). Once I deleted it, the problem went away.
Just thought I'd share that in case someone else has a similar problem.
