Why are some font types able to be made bold or italic
and some can only be used as regular.

RS

Because the ones who made them don't create bold and italic with the regular style
since italic is not only "leant" and bold only "grown" by any software, all is done by hand...

Because the person who created the fonts did not create bold and italic versions.

Many people who know little or nothing about type mistakenly believe that "bold" means "make the font thicker" and "italic" means "make the
font slant." In fact, when a person creates a font, he creates thebold and italic styles too; they are *different fonts.*

Not all fonts have all styles. And some fonts have more than just "bold" and "italic"--for example, Futura has light, medium, Roman, heavy, bold, extra bold, and black.

for the fonts that don't have the italic or Bold PS lets you fake it right click and check off faux bold or faux italic (it has some limitations for editing)
