Problem Selecting Text in CS 2

I am having problems selecting text on a layer that already has text on it. I select the text layer, then click on the type tool, then I try to select the text that is already on the layer.
Sometimes I am able to select the text. Sometimes I get a rectangle selection tool that acts on a new layer.

I have not seen any indication of why it works sometimes and why it doesn't work other times.

I am using CS 2 on a Windows XP SP 2 machine.

Thanks,

How many layers are showing in the layers palette?
One your layers are flattened, you can't select the text.

Go to the layers pallette and double-click on the big 'T' on the text layer!

Drew,

If you have followed the advice you have received already, and get the same rectangle, it is only a matter of a few pixels. I've got some 21" monitors with pretty high rez, and if I "miss" the text with the "I-beam," then I too get the rectangle. All that one needs to do is hit Esc (PC) and try the Selection again. Depending on the font, it can take a few tries. One way around this is to use the Magnifier to Zoom-in (making sure that the correct Text Layer is Active), then using the Text Tool's I-beam to Select.

Hope this, plus the other answers, will help you.
