How do I install the upgrade version?

The Photoshop 6.0 upgrade version demands that I insert a previous version CD disk. So, I put in my Photoshop 4.0 disk into the CD/DVD drive, and I get a message:
"Could not detect a CD in the CDROM drive. Please insert the CD-ROM from Adobe Photoshop 4.0 or later."

I have tried re-inserting and cleaning the CD disk. All to no avail. Keep getting the same error message. I guess the CD disk has simply rotted away, though it looks like it's in a perfect condition; not even a scratch, no smudges, nothing but a shiny surface).

I have a brand new PC running Windows XP.

I have been a Photoshop customer since version 2.5. Suddenly, I can't even install the latest upgrade. And Adobe offers no help! This is disgusting!

you'll need to call adobe. they'll give you a code to put in so that the upgrade (which doesn't recognize the older media) will install. It's still a valid upgrade, you just need to call them for the code.

First of all PS 6 is NOT the latest upgrade.

What you can try is copying the installer to the harddrive and placing the PS 4.0 CD in the CD Drive. Then launch the PS 6 installer.

OR, he could install version 4 first and THEN install version 6. Then the version 6 install won't need to look for the cd, but the previously installed version of the software.

NEVER install a newer version of PS in the same directory as an older version. The new version MUST have their own directory.

umm .. will version 4 run under WinXP?

Another thought, could you copy the version 4 installer onto the hard drive and point to it (instead of the cd) when installing version 6?

Re: umm .. will version 4 run under WinXP?

Would it matter? As long as the program would install, it would be there for the upgrade. Of course, the installer could choke.

yes, with some tweaking and the 4.01 update. but don's right. i think as long as he gets it to install he'll be ok.

which was why I asked if it would run! ;)

I guess what I should have more accurately asked was whether or not it would install :)

several posters have said yes it installs but won't run, then after help and the patch they've gotten it to work.

IIRC, the autorun installer doesn't work for PS4 on XP, but you can manually install by running the setup.exe from the disc
