this just started today. i assure you i have nothing extra on it like the autofx plugins managed everywhere else. cs doesnt wanna load. there is no indication it is running other than the photoshop.exe entry in the task manager. what i have noticed though is it starts out at around 6,200K memory usage and climbs by 4K every couple of seconds. right now its @ 6,848K and still going. CPU usage is idling @ an avg of 2% right now and photoshop is showing 0 CPU usage. again, this just started today. the only major changes i made to the computer recently was i uninstalled Norton Antivirus and move to McAfee for both AV and Firewall. and i even have them shut off right now. im out of ideas. tried reinstalling photoshop, no luck. tried it on other accounts on this computer, no luck. im getting very annoyed at this.

my specs:
2GHZ Celeron
512MB RAM
Intel Graphics w/64MB shared
40GB Maxtor HD (CS installed here)
60GB IBM HD
XP Pro

one thing i should add is that even earlier today it would load fast, but as soon as it finished loading, it would show an error saying something about a library or something (sorry, forgot to write it down), click ok and cs shutdown.

ok. uninstalled mcafee and cleared all traces of both it and norton. restarted. tried again. same thing. sits in task manager and thats it. uninstalled photoshop and installed again, now i get an error saying it failed to intialize properly and the error code that has a mess of 0's and only one 6 on the end. tried a simple reinsall (not an uninstall/reinstall, but simply reinstall) and now it crashes asking to send an error report or not send. this is really annoying the heck out of me.

install windows updates? it might be worth it to reinstall sp1 then uninstall and reinstall ps.
#3
yeah. i have all the updates. as a matter of fact, i just got notified of a new one today and had it installed first thing. only update listed was a drive update for my intel graphics but its old. i got the newest ones from intel.com

Can you try the steps I outline in :

Aaron Martone "I don't like Photoshop CS" 7/8/04 8:16am </cgi-bin/webx?13/3>

And see whether or not that helps your boot time? Pro side, you boot in seconds, while con is that you lose TWAIN support and FILE > AUTOMATE commands.

If this is the case, mayhaps we can talk about what we have in common in order to see if there is something that may be causing this problem for specific users.

Check for a default printer that's offline, or a TWAIN driver that's unhappy.

Hmm.

It seems that if I re-enable the IMPORT-EXPORT folder (which contains TWAIN_32.8BA), PS will hold up on "BUILDING TWAIN DEVICE LIST..." for a good 4 minutes.

But when it finally DOES load, sure enough, you goto FILE > IMPORT and there is (32bit) Microtek SlimScan C6.

Problem is, I selected it and it took it another 2 minutes to boot the SCANWIZARD program (v2.60, latest).

The scan itself was exceptionally slow. 8.5x11 at Millions of colors and 300ppi took 2 minutes.

When I shut down PS and restarted it, it didn't "assume" the device was still there, got slowed again on boot and on recapture. So my device SEEMS to be compatible, just EXTREMELY, UNGODLY slow.

I may look into getting a different Scanner. Some nice 48bit, 2400dpi USB one.

Now I gotta find out why the AUTOMATE folder is causing this slow down as well. It may be related to the OP's problem.

Another thing I noticed.

The WIA (Windows Image Acquisition Service is in STARTING mode. Never STARTED. Set to AUTOMATICALLY START. The only dependancy is RPC, which is running.

Aaron - that means that you have a TWAIN driver that is very buggy, or very unhappy (possibly because the scanner is disconnected). You need to remove that TWAIN driver.

You also might want to talk to Microtek....
#9
Ok. I'll remove the twain driver (Via an unistall or do I need to remove this TWAIN_32.8BA file in the Plugin Folder? I've not been happy with Microtek's scanner for some time. Looking at the HP 3670C model. 48bits, 2400dpi, USB. Might work better for me.

get usb2 if your system supports it!
#11
Leave the plugin where it is - that's not the driver, just Photoshop's interface to TWAIN.

The driver is what you installed when you installed the scanner.
