Disappearing History

I noticed that since I upgraded to Photoshop CS2 a couple weeks ago, that my History items will often disappear! This includes any snapshots, including the default. It's just blank!
I have to Edit>Step Backward often for the history to reappear. Has this been happening to anybody else!
I've never had a single glitch or bug in any Photoshop that I can remember going back to v4.
I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2, on an Athlon64, 1GB system.

You're obviously using more history points than you did before. What is the number of history states set to in preferences?

I have my states set to 20. However, the ENTIRE history and snapshots will disappear at random times.
Sometimes they will all disappear even after only 2 or 3 changes to a photo. The history pallette is just blank. When I step backwards using the PS menu, the history states, and snapshots will magically reappear!

It could be a problem unrelated to PS
Try running scandisk and defragging your hard drive

You could also try increasing the amount of memory available to PS in edit>preferences

Trash preferences? What does that mean?

Photoshop has a preferences file which stores all the tweaks you've made to Photoshop. It gets corrupted fairly often and you need to delete it. PS will then recreate it next time you launch it.

I am using the same scratch disk, as I only have 1 harddrive, and I have 150GB free.

C:\Documents and Settings\your name\Application
Data\Adobe\Photoshop\8.0\Adobe Photoshop CS Settings

if you're using CS and a similar source if your 'e suing & or 6. This is on XP.

I have approximately 500mb allocated to PS, and I have no system problems. Scandisk, etc are all perfect.
I went back to PS CS, and no more problems. Did a fresh install of CS2 again, and the history problem still returns intermittantly.

Thanks. I think holding shift-ctrl-alt while starting the application clears the preferences too.
I've tried both, also a fresh install, and the history still disappears once in a while.
I just talked to a friend who recently upgraded to CS2, and she confirms the same problem.

I wonder if it's something to do with your Athlon cpu

I seem to remember that Athlon users had to install a patch for an earlier version of PS

Hehe, just goes to show having an Intel doesn't mean as much as it used to. In fact, software is probably being optimized more for AMD cpus now. However, I have had nothing but Athlon cpu's for years, and all Photoshop versions have been flawless until now. In fact, Photoshop has been the most stable software I've used in 8 years. But, it seems the gui engine has been completely rewritten with CS2.
I just did a ctrl-sht-alt and started PS which will delete the ini files. So far, so good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Suggestion: Set up PS as you like it. Then copy the preference file and make sure you keep the back up somewhere safe. Next time you have a problem, go to the prefs file, delete it and replace with your back up. Saves a lot of time and trouble if you've changed a lot of things in PS.
