Camera Raw and coolpix 8700

Has anyone successfully used Camera raw to import .NEF files from a Nikon Coolpix 8700?

I get a "not the right kind of document" message when I try to open them.

I'm using Windows CS2 with v3.1 of Camera Raw.

Have you contacted Adobe support?

You should be able to.

The 8700 is a supported camera.

I have downloaded and installed a plugin from Adobe, and then it works to open the .nef format. I have a D70s, but it should be the same.

The download filename is Camera Raw.8bi and is stored in a zip file named Camera_Raw_3_1.zip. If you have any problems to find it - post your email addresse and I'll send it to you.
Good luck...

Thanks, John and Aaron. To elaborate further, yes, I have downloaded version 3.1, and I get an error when I try to read .NEF files from my camera, which is a cp8700.

I'm wondering if I may have a later model of the 8700 - mine's a 9X zoom model - that is not recognized by ACR.

Mike,

considering the 1153 contributions in the Adobe Forum PhS, Camera Raw, it's perhaps simpler to use Nikon Capture 4. IMO, the 150 Euros are not wasted - no problems for prepro- cessing by Capture, saving as TIFF 8 or 16 bits per channel and fine tuning by PhS.

8700 is supported. Here tested for D100.

Thanks, Gernot.

I want to use Camera Raw, because my eventual goal is not just processing the raw iamges, but writing tutorials to share with other Photoshop Users, specifically Curvemeister customers.

Thanks once again - and I'll check out the forum.

Hi:
In CS the presence of the Nikon Raw plugin could fould up the use of the Adobe Raw plugin.
see:
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/326616.html

This may not be your problem, but it is worth a look.

Good Luck

Ira Solomon

P.S.
I'm intrigued by your product. I'm going to take serious look at it in the next few days.

Thanks, Ira. I checked and that's not the problem either. Puzzling. I just get the error saying that it's the wrong file type.

Mike,

It seems odd that the 8700 would write files that are a problem. Unfortunately, I only have CP5700 & D-70, plus wife's Canon and all work fine with PS-ACR, except for the little glitch already mentioned when also installing Nikon View and Capture (each having their own Camera Raw.8bi in different folders). A few questions: do the images appear correctly, when viewed in camera? Have you checked for firmware updates for the 8700? Asked this question in groups like, rec.photo.digital.zlr?

As my system opens all of my Raw files, Nikon & Canon, fine, I'd be glad to check out one of your files to see what I get. It might not solve your problem directly, but may help point you to where the problem lies. If you would like me to give it a go, just send one to (removing the
Knots, of course).

Hunt,

Thanks for your kind offer. In preparing the file to email to you, I stumbled on the solution. It appears that the older version of NikonView (v
6.1.0) that I had been using to copy the files changes the .NEF files in
some way such that they no longer work with Camera Raw..

Dragging the file directly from the card to my hard drive resulted in a successful ACR session.

Thanks for your help, and for your role in finding the problem! --
