Hi everybody

My name is Kip Sikora and I am a Peace Corps volunteer in Ecuador and am working on a tourism brochure for a village in the southern Andes. I know this is a basic question but I cannot figure out how to alter and save an image as just a cicle. I can cut it out of the rest of the image but the file always saves with a white background. Is it possible to save just the circle? Better yet I would like to change the shape of the image from a rectangle to a cirlce. Thanks in advance for any help.

By definition, a raster image consists of a rectangular grid of pixels, and there is no way to make a raster image any other shape.

It is, however, possible to clip the image to a circle, (or preserve transparency outside the circle), in a page layout application, through methods that vary with application and image format.

kipsikora,

What application are you taking the image into?

You will need to use either an .eps with clipping path (check Help>Export Transparent Wizard>For Print, or you may be able to use a transparent PSD if taking the image into current versions of Illustrator or InDesign. Some applications will also accept TIFFs with clipping paths.

Are you using Photoshop? Crop the image to a square just larger than the circle you want the image to be. Select all…cut…paste. Now you have two layers. Make the bottom one invisible….make your rulers visible…drag guides to the top and side where you want the circle to be….change to circular marquee….hold down shift to make it round.
Selection/invert…cut.

Something like that….
