Why would you want to ? It is such an old version and you can't even upgrade to CS2 from it. Haven't you ever bought an upgrade for it over the last 8 years or so ? Try comparing what that version will do ... compared to CS & CS2 !

because PS is expensive.

Unlikely, since any machine running XP pro is almost certain to have
memory that PS 3 will simply fail to run.

The only thing I was speculating on was the amount of RAM in Bubba's machine.
You appear to be unburdened by modern hardware. If he's in the same boat
you, your advice will work.Jeesh, Eric. Just admit you were throwing out theories instead of knowledge. Toby went the mile to prove it worked.

If I were, I would.
The issue is well known, and was fixed with the Photoshop 4.01
"This update incorporates a number of fixes and performanceenhancements
including:addition,
Photoshop 4.0.1 supports computers with more than 1 GB of RAM. In
Photoshop can create a scratch disk on a hard disk partition orvolume that
is greater than 2 GB. "
The 1GB includes swapfile.
Toby went the mile to prove it worked.
We already knew it worked.
On low memory machines.
As I said.

A day late and a dollar short, but better than nothing.
The 1GB includes swapfile.
I hate to split hairs, but if I have configured the paging file at an initial size of 512MB, and my physical RAM is 1GB (a configuration that allows PS3 to run), how does this notional total of 1.5GB "including swapfile" tally with your assertion above?

Tired of speculation, I just tested it, and it works. However, it may require tweaking of paging file settings, as initially it refused to run when the page file was >1GB (the infamous "There is not enough memory (RAM) to launch Photoshop").
With XP's paging file turned off (Control
Panel->System->Advanced->Performance Settings->Advanced->Virtual Memory), or set to a minimum size of 512MB (max 2048MB), it launched and ran fine. Restart for paging file settings to take effect.

Eric is probably right, though one might be surprised at what can be
run on XP by setting the compatibility to a previous OS - only a testwill
work. ... I had to build one
machine with JUST 512 RAM to run older Painter, and several 3-D paint
programs, as all of my new machines had too much RAM for them to run.I've
been told that there is a way to set the RAM allocation for certainprograms
in XP, but cannot find that "way." All of the compatibilityselections, that I
can find, deal only with the OS compatibility and will not allowthese older
programs to function, when the memory is above (1024, in my case).Remember,
they were designed when 512 MB was considered the top limit of RAMone was
likely to have.

Eric is probably right, though one might be surprised at what can be made
run on XP by setting the compatibility to a previous OS - only a test will work. Now, back to Eric's comment. Many programs were designed to see (and test for) a certain quantity of memory. Back in PS3 days it was probably512
MB, or maybe 1024 MB. Painter (up until v6, IIRC) would work with 512 MBRAM,
but if your system had more, then it yields an "Out Of Memory" error, because
it topped out at 512 MB. More was not recognized at all. I had to buildone
machine with JUST 512 RAM to run older Painter, and several 3-D paint programs, as all of my new machines had too much RAM for them to run. I've been told that there is a way to set the RAM allocation for certainprograms
in XP, but cannot find that "way." All of the compatibility selections, that I
can find, deal only with the OS compatibility and will not allow theseolder
programs to function, when the memory is above (1024, in my case).Remember,
they were designed when 512 MB was considered the top limit of RAM one was likely to have. That's great, but ultimately it runs with XP, and that was the debate.
