As I have said before, I think that it might have something to do with Americans inability to use a Knife and a Fork at the same time. And, of course, there is their desire to elect and re-elect the strangest of people to be their President.

I'm a Canadian and I worked for an US company for a number years. During this time I traveled extensively.

From hippy California to snooty New England to hillbilly Arkansas to the middle of nowhere Texas....and for the most part I found the people I worked with to be gracious hosts (with the possible exception of Michigan). They just seem to change when they leave North America.

I also spent much of my time in places like Venezuela, Thailand, Europe and Saudi Arabia. People in these places tell me that it was refreshing to have a non-American to work with. In Saudi I was whisked through immigration and customs while the American I was with had a rough time of it....I was there during Ramadan and I tried to fit in (Something they say most Americans don't do) and people appreciated that and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable...... South Americans take exception to people from the US calling themselves Americans.They feel that everyone from the "Americas" should have that title....I think Europeans dislike Americans on general principle.....something about having thier butts kicked way back in 1812 or something like that.....8^) And Thai people (who I found to be a most unassuming and truely nice people) tell me that Americans are too demanding.

How for the joke......Most Americans I have met are quite capable of using a fork and knife at the same time.....just not very well.
And how can Bush claim to be re-elected if he wasn't elected the first time.......not my joke....but I thought it was funny.

Yes I think that all of the reasons so far are relevant.

When talking about Politicians, I keep thinking back to the initial stages of Watergate.

As soon as the news of the possible Scandal broke, everyone in the UK were convinced that Tricky was probably as guilty as hell, but were not quite so sure he would get found out.

On the TV news the Citiizens of the US all seemed to be convinced that "Our President" could not, and would never get involved in anything at all underhand. When the Party Machine brought out his daughter to say "My Daddy would never do anything like that" everyone here knew for certain that he was guilty. Yet the majority in the USA still seemed to believe he was innocent.

Talk about falling over with laughter. "What else would you expect a politician to be, if not a crook?" "Are they really that Simple?"

Then of course there was Reagan.

Admittedly at the same time we had the Crazy Lady, but she only got in, because of the Southern English, and they are not much better than the US Americans. It must have something to do with the education system.

I too am "American" as in a US citizen and resident. I have travelled quite a bit and am less impressed by some of these "Continental Types" than they are. They are legends in their own minds.
US is preeminent in world power and that scares many. This is not unreasonable, Since my state of Massachusetts is represented by the likes of Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, and Barney Frank. We need to toughen up, tell the politically correct police to "grow up", and "enter the real world". After we get our own house in order, we should play real hard ball with those know-it-alls in Europe, like France and Germany who have beeen "has-beens" since I can remember. They are only envious. When did they last impact the world in a positive manner?

Echo your first comments but would clarify your last line...Living in Hawaii whose native citizens are not all living in US by choice and which is itself not the US by choice. Still, they did at least get an apology. Just as well, couldn't see that happening today.

To the OP. If only they/you were childish...there might be hope. Arrogance and belligerence are not the sole preserve of children and it is traits such as these that unfortunately create the stereotypical vision of the US. Fortunately stereotypical does not mean across the board so we can only wait until those who might see an apology as a way to make amends are once again in the ascendant.
