Why do floating palettes lock up in Photoshop CS on XP

The floating layers palette (and all the others for that matter) can't be moved using my mouse unless I first select 'palette options' (on the palette itself). However, as soon as I select a tool from the toolbar, all of the palettes are locked up again.

I've been away from PS for about 6 months now, and I've only recently upgraded to CS. Have I simply forgotten something fundamental about Photoshop preferences and the floating palettes, or is this perhaps a CS bug?

Bill,

To the best of my knowledge no-one else has reported any problems with moving palettes, so it is likely something specific to your machine.

Try deleting your prefs file as per the FAQ. If that doesn't help I would suspect a bad driver on your machine (monitor, mouse etc.)

Thanks. I'll whack the prefs file as per suggestion, and if need check the mouse driver (which is only 1 year old!).

FYI: I discovered that PS 6 and CS are both installed on my desktop computer. PS 6 does not have any problems with floating palettes locking up. That also eliminates the possibility of the mouse drivers being bad.

Is it possible that I'm the first one to encounter a newly discovered CS bug? There seem to be a record amount of them. In fact, I'm thinking I may revert back to PS 6: it seems to run faster and with fewer complications than CS.

Bill - no, that does not eliminate the mouse drivers.

Since you're the only one encountering it, more likely it's due to preferences corruption, or something else specific to your machine.

I stand corrected. Updating the Optical Mouse drivers fixed the palette locking problems in CS, although it's hard to imagine why; the mouse is only about 8 months old and likes all of my Macromedia and Adobe apps -- except CS.
