Why so many temporary files?

Due to a "unable to save" warning , I’ve realized that Photoshop CS created and forgot about 30GB spread on seven "Photoshop Tempxxxxx" (no tmp extension) files. My system settings on XP sp1 were intended to delete tmp files, not for files with no extension at all…
Again: why so much difference in size of such files? It ranges from a handful of MBs up to 16GB
