A follow up question resulted in this response:
"Ain't gonna happen ...... Adjustment layers have some limits, and Shadow&Highlight doesn't fit those limits."

Duplicate your Backround Layer and do the S?H work on that.

yes but that's a big overhead with large images and worse - you can't go back and change your mind!

Thanks Ian - do you know an intelligent discussion/tutorial on S/H, - it intrigues me - but can't quite get a handle on what it's doing? (well, other than adjusting S/H!)
