Please can you help?

I am following the rotoscoping tutorial on the site link above. With the white lines it is fine. However, when I have to use the lasso tool to draw around the shape I need, I get told that "the layer is not directly editable". Each time I draw onto a new frame, it automaitcally creates a new layer that is linked with the previous one and has a vector mask. I just cannot get it to do the same when using the lasso tool.

I would be grateful for a resolution to this problem.
