I’m poor and use 5.5 for all my work but I’m trying to show a friend the basics (and that’s about all I really know myself) and he’s using 7 and I can’t figure out something extremly basic… why does the line tool now create an empty nonfilled box instead of a basic line?

Up on the Options Bar (top of screen below the main menu) at the far left are three icons. You probably have the center one (Paths) selected. Try the left one (Shape Layers). In the layers Palette, a Layer Mask will be created when Shape Layers is selected. With Paths, you would need to fill or stroke from within the Paths Palette.

Peadge 🙂
