Created "mottled" look from a solid color

I saw a portrait photo recently where the background was gray but it was mottled rather than one solid consistent color. You know, kind of like the backgrounds pro photographers use when shooting portraits.

I filled a new file with gray and tried every which way to create that mottled look but could not figure out how to do it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Try Filter>Render>Difference Clouds, stretch with free transform if necessary, and change the overal darkness by adjusting with levels. --

Thanks. That worked pretty well.

Thanks. That worked pretty well.

Also, adding noise and doing a Gaussian Blur afterward might help.
