You can solve this problem with incredible speed just by outlining the area you wish to fill in the quick mask using the lasso tool, then holding down the ALT key on your keyboard and pressing the DELETE key. ALT-DELETE is the Photoshop command to fill an area with the foreground color. In Quick Mask, this fills in the selected area. No brush necessary.
Using the paintbrush to fill in large areas is time-consuming and wasteful.
