Change river color to blue

How can I change the colour of a river from brown to blue. I have PS CS2.

For example http://preview.tinyurl.com/22887f

This river is definitely brown. How was it made to appear blue? (by the way - it is not the sky reflected off the river).

I can think of several reasons to not emulate what's been done with the sample photo, but depending on the scene you might be able to use the replace color feature. (It won't work where sky meets sea)

Others require masking, at least the ones I am thinking of. Do you know how to use masks?

Open the image.
Convert to LAB colour mode.
Select everything from the horizon down.
Open the channels pallette.
highlight the "b" channel.
Images>Adjustment>Invert.
Convert back to RGB and save.

This converts the river from blue back to brown, so it's pretty afair to assume that a similar (or the same)process was used to convert the river from brown to blue.

Use quick mask mode to mask off the water, create a new layer fill your mask/selection on the new layer with blue, then change the layer blending mode to color. Drop the layers opacity if need be.

Geez. Everyone's given suggestions that'll work (some more readily than others), but everyone's taking the long, convoluted way 'round. What, are people frightened for hte Curves command?

Select the river and use Imge->Adjust->Curves.

Yes I can use masks.
I will also try out some blend modes with a blue fill layer - not sure if this might work too.

That works fine, thanks.
Just one thing with Quick Mask.
If I have a large area to mask I brush around the border to give a red mask border. How do I then quickly fill the insides of that border without having to brush over the whole area. I tried using the bucket but it didn't fill the area correctly. There seems to be some feathering that doesn't fill correctly.

Use a bigger brush to fill the area.
or
Switch from Quick Mask back to normal mode and use the lassoo tool to select the rest of the area.

Or, next time, make the big easy selection first, then use quickmask to feather out the edges.

Select it with the lasso and fill it by pressing Alt-Delete on your keyboard.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. The suggestions you got from the others are right on the money. I always use a small brush to edge the area and then use a large one to quickly fill in. It is important to remember that if you are using a soft edge brush that you need to overlap the outline strokes a bit so that you don't get a soft line going around it. It is because of this that I don't use the bucket tool to fill in.

You can solve this problem with incredible speed just by outlining the area you wish to fill in the quick mask using the lasso tool, then holding down the ALT key on your keyboard and pressing the DELETE key. ALT-DELETE is the Photoshop command to fill an area with the foreground color. In Quick Mask, this fills in the selected area. No brush necessary.

Using the paintbrush to fill in large areas is time-consuming and wasteful.

I've selected areas before and changed the color quickly by using the hue/saturation slider.
