How does Crop & Straighten Work?

I want to find out exactley how the automated crop and straighten works, if it can be edited or modified, or if a similar action can be created with the tools already given in photoshop. I work with images directly from pdfs imported to photoshop and they are often laid out in order of the way I want to number them. In other words I cut them top to bottom left to right and then I use the new tool in automate to name and save them in that order. I want to be able to automatically cut them out in the order they are laid out in and then save them using the other tool so that all I have to do is hit play on my action, is this possible?
