I have Photoshop 7.0

I am attempting to add lighting effects to a solid black set of text, however, the "Lighting Effects" option is greyed out when I open that list. How do I fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Rasterize your text layer. make a duplicate first if you arent done editing it

The only other thing that would come to mind is that you are working in a greyscale or 16 bit mode.. Make sure your mode is set to RGB
