Defining patterns – PS CS2

I am trying to define a pattern. I have the layer active, the layer has pixels on it, I am using a rectangular selection and when I go to Edit>Define Pattern it is ghosted. I have done this many times in the past so when it stopped working I run out of things to try pretty fast.

Just a guess: set feather to zero.

Hi Mike,
I can no longer reproduce the problem. I distinctly remember checking feather because that was when I learned that the right-click>Feather either overrides or is unrelated to the Feather setting in the properties bar (or whatever that thing is called). The layer I was trying to use as a source for the pattern has no masks but in the process of troubleshooting the problem maybe I was selecting a layer by clicking on its mask. Maybe some combination of how I use feather, how I was using undo and how I was selecting a test layer trapped me in a cycle of incompetence, but that is speculation and I have little doubt that it will happen again.

Any transparent pixels in the selected area will disable the Make Pattern command.

Well Buddy ! I beleive the reason is that you cannot define patterns with selections which
have smooth/rounded edges /round , so make sure you switch of feather option while defining the
selection , cause feather not only produces a smooth transition but a rounded edge as well !
