Open cdr files

Hi
Is it possible to open a .cdr file using Photoshop - I am getting an unrecognised error with this format

No. They are largely incompatible programs. It would be theoretically possible to turn a cdr file into pixels with Photoshop, but that is all. I've never seen an import filter for this, though.

There is some limited ability to open Draw files with Illustrator, mainly for older versions.

FWIW:
CDR is the file extension used by Corel Draw for VECTOR
graphics files. PhotoShop is a bitmapped image creation and editing program. Totally different, in both concept and
reality.

Best course would be to get Corel Draw, or even the lower cost Corel Draw Essentials.

Another program thought just hit me. WordPerfect and their Presentations (WP's PowerPoint), did open CDR's and allow Save_As several PS compatible formats. If you don't have CDraw, Essentials, you might try someone with WordPerfect. OTOH, it could now be that they do not support newer CDR's, as I have not done this in years.

I just tried it. I could not open or insert as image file any of the newer ..cdr's I have made into WordPerfect or Presentations. Get "Incompatible file format", although .cdr is offered as an option. It is possible I didn't install the filter.

It is easy enough to convert .cdr's to .ai's, IF you have CorelDraw. If you have Corel PhotoPaint you can even open a .cdr and save it as a .psd (although, of course, you lose the vector qualities).

If you just have .cdr's and no Corel software, AFAIK you are SOL.

It used to work, but we are talking about several versions of Corel Draw (maybe even back to 3, or 4), and also older early Corel WP & P, just after Novell sold it to Corel. It was worth a try though. Thanks for the feedback, as I don't have CDraw on any machine now, and all the old CDR files are from way, way back, and did open, last I checked.

It sure is difficult trying to keep up with all of the proprietary file formats.

OK, this won't retain the vector properties, but one thing you can do if you have ThumbsPlus is create the thumbnails of the cdr images then right click a particular image and click Quick Process/Convert to and you'll get lots of possibilities including png, jpg, bmp etc.

Wow, another use for ThumbsPlus. I knew I liked that program from the very beginning. Gotta' get my v7 update today.

With the old WP conversion, you still had the vector data, though it was now in yet another format, WPG (WordPerfect Graphics), and some of the shapes often got combined, so editing was a real do-over chore. I guess that Corel decided that they were not selling enough CDraw packages, so they changed the format. All the old CDR stuff I have (back about v3) still goes through newer WP and WPP just fine, and since I haven't used any newer CD releases, I doubt I'll ever get into this mess. It is nice, however, to know that TPlus will help me out. Thanks.

Why not publish your cdr file to a pfd file 9 (file/publish to pdf)? Then bring it into PS and do whatever you want with it. I do this every day without a problem
CD9 does this extremely well. Just remember to save it at a high enough resolution (600-800) before final export.
