Engraved/Woodcut Effect

Been searching for some kind of Engraved/Woodcut effect like they do on faces in the New York Times.
I was wondering what the actual process is that they use in the newspaper... and if it's possible to achieve it using Photoshop. I tried a few filters by Andromeda, etc., but so far have not found a filter or a way to duplicate this effect exactly.
Any ideas...?
Here's an example:

Thanks a bunch!

Andromeda makes a great set up plug-ins for different halftone effects. The plug-in you should check out is called "CutLine" Check out their website at http://www.andromeda.com/main/cutline.php

BTW: This company is also noted for writing Adobe Streamline as a subcontractor for Adobe back in the day...

What you should notice is that the drawing follows the 3d contours of the face and clothing. A plugin will not be
able to "guess" those contours, hence plug-ins, on their own, will not be able to get the same effect.

Look at where the cloth "ripples". The rippling is clearly a 3d effect, not just light and shade, though related.

Easy to use graphics effects:
