Gradient help required

I want to take the following image and apply a gradient to it, so that from say left to right it looks like it is gradually appearing out of a white page.

All I can achieve at the moment with the gradient tool, is the page going from solid black to white.

In other words, what I want to achieve is the images of the phones to fade in from nothingness to being fully there, but with no alteration to the phone colors themselves - just a gradual fade in from left to right.

I'm using Photoshop 8.0

This should work. Create a new all all white layer below the layer with the phones. Create a mask on the phone layer and with the mask active, drag a gradient from left to right. Be sure the mask is active, not the layer itself when you drag the gradient. Use a dark gray for the foreground and white for the background color of the gradient. Experiment with the gray color until you get the effect you want.
