Is there a simple way to combine an adjustment layer and a new selection so that the adjustment layer applies only to area in the selection?
I know I should have make the selection first, but it's too late.

Yes. Make the Selection, with your Adjustment Layer active, and click the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layer's palette.

want to modify, and choose "add layer mask to selection". Delete the layer mask, and then use "Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection" to create a new layer mask containing both the selection and the original layer mask.

Wow, that's the cumbersome way to di it. You can do it in one step just by making the selection and choosing the "Save Selection" command from the Select menu. In the dialog, choose "layer mask" as the destination. Viola!
Or simply fill the selection with black (while on the layermask)In article <tPlGg.19712$ says...

Sure. First save your work. Then right click on the layer mask that you want to modify, and choose "add layer mask to selection". Delete the layer mask, and then use "Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection" to create a new layer mask containing both the selection and the original layer mask.
