photoshop activation

Hi,

I was surprised to find an ebay seller selling photoshop cs2 on ebay recently for real cheap. All this while I've been using gimp on linux but I find the menu items absolutely confusing and I was left clueless as to what would happen if I click on it. Having seen photoshop in the past on a friend's pc I remember it was more user friendly and so I immediately bought the one on sale from ebay using paypal.

Now it turns out that since it was real cheap it is probably bootleg software ( whatever that means ). I tried to contact the seller on ebay to find out whether this is a real legit disc that I bought but I got no reply.

The disc that I bought has a keygen program on it. And the seller indicates in one of the README files on his disc that I can activate the software over the phone.

Can it be done? I have not tried it yet. I am in two minds of just not using it after 30 days are over, or alternatively to try activating it over the phone. can some one please advise ?

Go ahead. Try activating it. If it works you have got a cheap copy of Photoshop. Of course, it may not work for long and it may introduce problems on your system that you are, as yet, unaware of. Who Knows? Of course if you do call Adobe with a bogus serial number, maybe they will just send around someone to knock on your door. Again, who knows?

Maybe it is OK, maybe it isn't. How is your concience? Do you feel you made an honest transaction? Do you care? It is up to you really.

You may have got what you paid for......

If all you wanted to do is get something cheap, you could have just saved yourself a lot of trouble and just bought a legal license of Paint Shop Pro. It does pretty much the same things as PS.

$80 off the Corel site, and I've seen it going for $49 on sale at the local Fry's store from time-to-time

Or you could have hunted up the PhotoGimp mod for Gimp and made it look like PS.

To me it was a good deal. So thats why I bought it.

I obviously don't want anything illegitimate. People sell all kinds of things on ebay. Sometimes even things that are really expensive first hand are sold for a bargain in ebay. So, since I was shopping around on ebay that day, I came across this software, and bought it. So the answer to "Do you feel you made an honest transaction?" is "Yes".
"Do you care?" - Yes

So if I "shouldn't" try to activate it, I won't .

I need to know Did I commit a crime buying it ?
Wil I commit a crime in using it for 30 days ?
Will I commit a crime if I try to activate it thereafter ?

Yes I have just gotten gimpshop - it is a gimp that looks like photoshop.
Is this what you mean? I'll have to look up what is PhotoGimp.

I do hope that you bought it "cheap," and I mean real cheap. If it has a keygen program, it is warez and the keygen prog. just comes up with the crack. That is why Adobe has gone to route of "Activation." I doubt that they will allow it to work. Beyond that, their actions are anyone's guess.

If you are not using the program commercially, and can otherwise qualify, the educational version of PS is not that expensive. All features, IIRC, are activated and there are no limitations, other than for non-commercial use. If you are working on your images, and not selling the results, then all you have to do is be a student, or instructor. Actually, a class at a community college is a good way to qualify and learn the program.

People bemoan the Activation system that Adobe has put into place, but I can see their point with all of the cracked versions out there.

My personal feeling is that about 90% of the stuff on e-bay is bogus in one way, or another. Others will refute this, but, based on first-hand and good second-hand experience, I stick by it.

Well yes I bought it real cheap :) Imagine my exitement. Just for touching up my digital cam photos.

But I like your advice. For now, I'll just forget I ever bought it. Will look for the educational version later. Or paintshop pro. Heck I might even just stick with the gimp.

Carefully read the instructions thta come with the key gen it should tell you what to do so you do not have to actually phone adobe.

You didn't know? What a maroon. Of course you knew. You can't get a $700 software package for a couple of dollars and it be legit. If you didn't know you have to be the stupidest human on Earth... outside of Bush that is.

My suggestion is to do what I did - turn the sucker into eBay for selling pirated software. You won't get your money back, but eBay will suspend/cancel the seller's account.

I remember seeing something like this on tv awhile back - can't remember exactly what show it was - but some guy bought a high-end dvd player for his wife as a gift - he apparently bought it off the 'back-of-a-truck' sort of deal. Wife didn't know that and filled in the product registration / warranty card (with the unit's serial number) and sent it in. Apparently a whole truck load of these things had been highjacked and the company had flagged all the serial numbers for those particular units. As soon as the card came in they passed the information along to the local police who showed up for the unit and to find out how exactly they acquired it.

Gimpshop might be what I meant by photogimp - don't use gimp myself, so I'm not 100% sure of whats out there, just heard someone mentioned that you could mod it to look fairly close to what PS looks like.

You can download a copy of the latest version from adobe,com and use it for 30 days. So whay take the chance on a bootleg version?

"Bootleg" means "stolen." You gave your money to a criminal in exchange for pirated software; that's why it was so cheap.

That's a common misunderstanding, often repeated by people who do not understand what Photoshop does.

Paint Shop Pro only does a very small fraction of what Photoshop does. However, that's fine; most casual home users only know about a very small fraction of what Photoshop does and only need a very small fraction of what Photoshop does, so for such casual users, Paint Shop Pro is an excellent choice. After all, if you believe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro do the same things, you clearly do not need the functionality that Photoshop has that Paint Shop Pro does not.

Another brilliant alternative is PS Elements. You can try the full version, free, legit., from Adobe, and it's not expensive.

You did not commit a crime. You paid $30 for a demo that you could download from Adobe for free. Whether the seller committed a crime depends on the Adobe TOS for the demo.
