I appreciate the help a few hours ago from others and Chris on cuting an image and making the back transparent. When I cut the image in one complete swoop it works fine, and I can delete the background in the trash can and I get a transparent background....BUT when I take an image and cut around the edges in sections or parts, Photo shop will create a delete background. I can do a better job of cuting an image if I do it a little bit at a time.
