I use PH 6.1, Win.XP.prof.,550 RAM, a 40gb and a 50 gb drive. I use TIFF to store my files. What size should I allow for short term files, and then for long term or files to be moved to cd or other. I am working on a collection of paintings from the 1800’s and use a huge amount of storage to preserve quality. I suspect I am overdoing it.

How are you capturing the original images? Scanner? Camera? If this is archival work, high original capture quality is important. What size are the originals? How will the files be used in the future?

It just "depends".
Mainly on what type of output and output size you ever expect to use them for. 300-400ppi at 8×10 output size is a far cry from the same at 16×20 or beyond, is my point.
