Photoshop CS2 very slow loading ?

I have a Pentium 4 2.53 GH with a GeForce 5900 video card and it takes Photoshop CS2 more than 3 minutes to load. Is there a way to speed things up without buying a faster computer? It works just fine once it is loaded.

Lots of possible causes.. What other programs/utilities/etc are running on your system? Try disabling stuff like virus scanners and see if it makes any difference. I've also seen bad font files cause this, not specifically with CS2 but with other versions of PS. Also try renaming or deleting your preferences file (Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp) and see if the problem goes away.

Also, during startup CS2 displays a splash screen, showing its progress. Does it pause at a specific point every time? What does the screen say CS2 is doing when it pauses?

Slow loading of Photoshop may be caused by one of several problems, including:

- A large number of fonts, and/or corrupt or damaged fonts installed on the system;

- A very large number of plugins;

- Insufficient RAM;

- Viruses or spyware infecting the system.

How many fonts do you have installed? How many plugins? When was the last time you ran scans for viruses and other malware?

I deleted the Adobe Photoshop CS2 Prefs.psp file and then restarted the screen that took the most time was reading preferences after that was completed it scanned for plugins and tolls which went pretty fast. I do not have viruses or spyware so that isn't the problem. It actually loaded faster this time than what it was doing. How do you check if there are bad fonts or not?

Do you have Canon's plugin for RAW camera files installed? If so, try uninstalling it. If I remember correctly, this plugin causes slow startup times on some systems.

Also, Microsoft has a font checking utility. Search Google for "Microsoft Font Validator".

Ditto on the suggestions in the prior post to the slow loading problems. However, even under the best of circumstances, PSCS2 does everything a bit slower than PS7 IMHO. But, the difference is not that much (on my system anyway) and CS2 does much more. It sounds like you've got more than enough RAM and speed on your computer....and a good video card. If you've added fonts to the CS2 program, that's a high risk addition (to CS2 and most other programs...fonts can cause all kinds of problems). If you've added a lot of plugins, that may be your problem (disable them if you can and see what happens). Did you have an earlier version of PS or is CS2 your first? If you had a prior version, was anything else added at or near the time you installed CS2? Have you downloaded fonts to any programs that CS2 might access? I use CS2 on my notebook computer with 512 MB RAM, 1Ghz processor and it works okay for me...a bit slower than PS7 but with all the added tools, I can wait a bit longer. Three minutes to download seems like a long time given what your computer should be able to do. What happens after it loads? When using a lot of RAM is your computer starting to slow down?
