Can't start Photoshop as non-admin-user under Win XP

I've got Windows XP Pro and Photoshop 6.0.

When I try to start Photoshop as 'normal' (not admin) user, I get the following message:

Could not initialize Photoshop, because the file is protected. Revoke the protection, using preferences in Windows Explorer.
(For I'm german, I've got a german Version. So this is a translation...)

What file is ment?

When I change the user-type from restricted to administrator, it works, but i dont't want to give everyone admin-privileges...

Can someone help me, please?

As far as know, you're going to need to give users power user or admin rights.

By the way, your English is just fine.

To add the user to the group 'Hauptbenutzer' (Hauptbenutzer = main user, think this is what you call power user) unfortunately is not enough.

Still hope, there is a better way, than give the users admin rights. Think it could be enough, to change the access rights for the mentioned file. But which file is it?

Your users MUST have r/w access to %system%\Documents and Settings\~username\Application Data\Adobe (and sub folders). They also need access to some registry entries.

as power-user they even have access to C:\programs\adobe and to C:\windows. They also have access to HKLM/software/Adobe ...
Not full access, but it should be enough.

Think I need an util that can show me, what Photoshop is doing. (What files it tries to open etc.)

Hello Tony,

the problem is the permission on the boot/startup drives (usually c:\) root folder. Photoshop set his work volume to this drive by default.

One Solution:

Grant one user temporarily write/full access to c:\ (only this folder) Start Photoshop, set the work volume to something different, or switch it off.

[ In German (Voreinstellungen --> Zusatzmodule und virtueller Arbeitsspeicher --> Arbeitsvolume) ]

Then use this user's preference file
"adobe photoshop 6 prefs.psp"

in "documents and settings\%username%\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop x.x"

as a template for other users.

(We are working with german Win XP and Photoshop, hopefully we get the right "microsoft style" translation.)

Tools to view programs operations can be obtained form www.sysinternals.com, look for regmon & filemon, these are freeware utils.

(Filemon does not help in this case....., cause no error is produced, but a lot of get attribute calls)

I am having the same problem (though in English :) )

Do you know WHAT registry entries it needs access to? I really don't want to give my users increased power over their machines if I can possibly avoid it.

ps needs power user rights. or at least full access to the application data folder and the adobe hive in the registry. (HKLM/Software/Adobe)

So far giving them access to the HKLM/Software/Adobe section of the registry, and R/W to the Program Files/Common Files/Adobe folder seems to be working. We'll see if it works for the long run.

they'll also need create/delete for when prefrences need to be created. you should also do the application data folder if the user doesn't already have full control over that. that ought to about cover it. btw, what os was this on? xp or 2k?
