I found this at the HP Forums:
Viewing mtiff files <

Basically, it's not a standard TIFF format, from what I've read.

What a strange device - only outputs in either PDF or a TIFF format that no one supports.
Have you tried the PDF output of the HP9100? Can Photoshop open those?

We also use the digital sender in our office (defaults to pdf not tiff). I've not really been happy w/ the dynamic range and quality so use well a scanner actually made to do photos.
Per my understanding the mtiff format is a multipage tiff format that photoshop doesn't support. the mtiff is a branch of the tiff format used mainly for faxes, etc. you can open them in imaging in windows or in a program such as omnipage or textbridge, both of which have options to export each page independently.
Even if you only have one page in the image, photoshop still doesn't recognize the formation.
