Why won't Alt-Backspace fill my selection or layer ?

I am using Photoshop CS. In many tutorials I see the keyboard shortcut Alt-Backspace listed as an easy way to fill my layer or current selection. All that happens when I do it is in my history palette an entry "Fill" is added to the list, but no colour is added to my selection or layer/ Anyone know why ? (Preferences already reset to defaults).

Thx

Is Transparency locked on the layer?

Are you in 16 bit mode?

Assuming that you are using the defaults as stated above, your foreground swatch should show black and your background swatch should show white. Alt-Backspace should fill your background with black (foreground color) and Control-Backspace should be filling with white (background color).

Start with a new canvas in rgb or cmyk to try it out. 8- or 16-mode doesn't matter - it should work regardless.

I must have done something particular (let you know if I can reproduce it), because a new day, new documents to work with and presto! it all works like it is supposed to. Thanks for your answers!
