Need help to solve a mystery - dotted picture

1310 views10 repliesLast post: 7/9/2006
Hello,
I took a small black & white photograph and did SOMETHING to it in either photoshop or Windows paint which made it turn out looking like little dots composing the image. Unfortunately I cannot remember how I did it :( Its something simple as I don't remember taking very long to do it.

Please help me figure out how I could take that photo and achieve the same effect.

Could you perhaps try it out and see if you can get a dotted picture as SHARP as the one I have? I've tried and tried but to no avail.

Thank in advance to anyone who helps me.

PS: I've tried Filter->Pixelate->Mezzotint but that does not give a dotted image quite as sharp as the one I mysteriously generated.

thank you for your reply.

I just figured it out myself.

Yes you are right about changing it to a bitmap in photoshop. Thereafter, I selected 'dither' or something that poppedup and it produced the image. Its much sharper than if you were to use the Filter->Pixelate method.

Sorry if my pictures don't show, its one of them free webhosts and I guess you get what you pay for :(

Thank you again for your help.

Opps, here is the link to the pictures :

Change to Grayscale, then change to Bitmap and choose Halftone Screen in the dialog.

BTW your pix don't display.

No problems viewing here, try www.pixentral.com for posting images. Also with your halftone, have a play around with the frequency setting.

Sorry. I can see them with Internet Explorer which I usually avoid using (I use Firefox). The epics are in .bmp format which one doesn't usually encounter on the web.

The oroblem is that you uploaded the pictures as .bmp images.

You can not use .bmp images on the Web. If you want to put pictures on the Web, make them .gif or .jpg.

As far as dithering b&w images. I particularly like the Floyd Steinberg method. It produces strikingly beautiful results when the images are viewed at full size.

Could it have been done by adding noise? (that's in filters, I think)

How does one apply the Floyd Steinberg method in Photoshop? Is it a plug-in?

Convert to grayscale, then to bitmap. F-S is the same as diffusion dither, which is short for "error diffusion" dither.
