drawing technique question

Can anyone help explain how the following type of drawing technique is achieved? Is this something that can be done in Photoshop or is it geared more towards Illustrator? Here are several examples of the type of drawing technique I'm trying to learn how to do: the wine glass in each example has the thick to thin brush strokes, nice clean smooth edges and the swirls and curves in the strokes. I'd like to be able to duplicate this effect from an object on a photo by creating a new blank layer and applying the similar brush strokes...kind of like tracing parts of the object in the photo with the drawing technique. Are these custom brushes? If so, how are they created? Is it another type of technique? I've tried drawing paths and stroking them with different brushes, but I don't even come close to this type of nice drawing technique. Any suggestions on how to achieve this effect would be appreciated. Tutorials or any resources would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

It may be that this can be accomplished in PhotoShop, but I would do it in Illustrator. It's easy there to get those nice tapered swirls with crisp edges. You can open the photo and do the brush work on a layer just like you describe.
