Digital Film Tools Light! How Do We Create Our Own Patterns?

Digital Film Tools Light! has some wonderful
patterns that we can use on our images. They are
..JPG or .PNG files. How do we make our own patterns?
I tried one image of mine, reduced it to B&W and 256 colors, and reduced its size, but it shows nothing when I load it in DFT via Adobe Photoshop.
Thanks!

I should also mention that these patterns are not just tiles. They are images that can be used by themselves, not as tiles, and be considerably modified when they are loaded with DFT Light! into the Photoshop screen.

Well, they are actually gels. They used to place gels on top of the lens for special effects. So, my question is: how do I make a gel for use with Photoshop. And, is there a way to load it in Digital Film Tools Light?
Thanks!
