Curved beam

How can I create one? I have tried a reflective gradient then spehrizing it but that looks terrible, I want to create an effect like the top of a planet, or the top hemisphere of the solar eclipse, an arced beam of light.. any ideas?

You want a semicircle? Marquee tool (circle version) then subtract the bottom with the Marquee (rectangle version).

You want an arch? Pen tool, then convert to selection.

Nearly, an arc, like one of the colored sections of a rainbow.

I need newbized instructions if possible, I have never used photoshop before and tried the pen tool but ended up creating a funny egg shape at best.

with the shape tool make a circular selection, feather if you want soft edges
if you want a half circle put select tool on rectangle and minus from selection and cut it in half
put the gradient tool on radial, color to transparent
fill with gradient

Hi There!

To create what resembles a curved ray coming from a vanishing point and taking a tapered shape in the nearest point, you may do the following:

1- Draw a longitudenal vertical rectangle of color white (or any color you want or any gradient you want such as rainbow gradient, filled by dragging the gradient tool to the right or left while Shift is pressed) on a separate new layer (e.g. use aspect ratio of about 1:5) 2- Select the painted area, by Ctrl+Click on the layer
3- Select> Feather> select a suitable feathering number (e.g. 10) 4- Ctrl-Shift-I to inverse the selection
5- Backspace (to erase feathered edges)
6- Use distortion tool like Filter>Distort>Shear
7- Draw distortion curve by putting an anchor in the middle, then you pull it to the right or left as maybe appropriate for your case 8- Now you have a curved motion blur effect that will be further distorted by:
9- using either Free Transform with perspective distortion (squeezing one of the top anchors) or use Image Warp (for PS CS2 if you have it) (and you will have a more complicated control on distorted portions). You may need to rotate layer according to need.

OOPS that didn't work, sorry
tried making a white semi circle shape and using effects for a drop shadow but that also makes a shadow below the arc

then I tried creating a semi circle path and stroking it, but I couldn't make the brush stroke fade from dark to light as I would've liked

Try the same thing using Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinates. --
