Margins for A4 document?

This is for Photoshop CS.
What are the margins normally set to for an A4 document? Is it in inches or millimeters?
What resolution do I need for an A4 saved as PDF multi-page document? I'm creating a script to create a multi-page PDF document.

There is no "correct" answer to that question. What is the intent of the PDF's? How much white space does the design require?

The 'absolute' limit depends upon the printable area of the printer it is being sent to, for one thing, but the 'average' printable area for an A4 Laser printer will be about 200mm x 290mm and would be centred on the A4 sheet. For most inkjets it would be less than that with uneven margins.

If printing is not your concern, then it becomes purely a design issue. Some designs require lots of white space, others very little.

If I create a document in Microsoft Word in the letter page size and then change the page layout to A4, I get a message that says
that the margins need to be fixed. I get a 1.25 inch margin on the left and right and 1 inch at the top and 1.24 inch at the
bottom. The page should be printable. I'm trying to determine what the printable area is for an A4 document. That way my script
will know where the text can be placed and still be seen when printed.

Would that be a good choice for the margins for an A4 document?

I have no experince using this size paper.

And if you change your targerted printer, those required margins will change...

However, the margins you have quoted should be 'safe' for most printers, and Acrobat has the ability to scale the page if they happeb to be outside any particular printer's abilities

That's true. In Visual Basic I could always query the printer and get the size of the canvas that I could write on.
This will be an Acrobat document so the margins we talked about should work.
