Photoshop 5.5 adding pixels

I recently read that there is a method to increase the pixels in a photo that was scanned or from digital camera? I have searched to find the article again and can't seem to find it. Does anyone know of a tip or trick to increase the pixels? The original photo was saved as a jpeg and will only give me good quality at 3x5. I want to try to enlarge the photo to an 8x10. Any help would be appreciated. I am using a PC with XP.

You can simply increase the image size, just keep the "resample" box checked.

It's best to do it in small steps - say 10% increase each time. The increase you are looking for is a lot, so I woul dhold out little hope. It depends on what the image is.

Before you do that, can you tell me how big the image is in pixels?

Donna,

You can resize the image (Image|Resize) and make the image bigger (more pixels). BUT... be aware that doing so is asking photoshop (or any program) to guess where they should go, and what colors they should be. Increasing image size is dicey and not often recommended. I hear that Genuine Fractiles does a decent job, and photoshop may even do a decent job, but just realize that you are trying to put pixels where they don't exist, so it's a mathematical formula that is used making the results unpredictable.

Peace,
Tony

[Edit] Colin is fast on the draw...

Photo dimension is 380x472---169 KB. It is a photo of a child. Do you think there is any hope in getting any increase?

Sorry, but I hold out little hope. However, nothing ventured ... Give it a go and see how it turns out.

There are various tools around than can give better upsampling, but they all have limitations and cost $$$. Probably best known in Genuine Fractals.
