Does anyone know what software plastic surgeons use to take a picture of a patient face, other body parts and make adjustments so the patients can see what they will look like after surgery.

If you look at some "art" made on faces it might be "the liquify tool" -no reconstruction tool available.-

Stephan,

I realize Photoshop is the most powerful graphics program out here, I have owned every version since ver 4 but I have not been able to do what I want with Photoshop. If you know how please tell me. In the software I am looking for if you have a picture of a face and move the nose that is too big or smooth out a bump . I would love to use Photoshop for this but I have yet to see how it can be done

The transform fonction and the pen tool are your best tools. Why don’t you post a picture somewhere and tell us what you try to achieve? (don’t attach it to a post in theis NG)

I’ve seen and used the same software that plastic surgeons use (at medical trade shows). Its custom stuff, not for sale via retail, and unfortunately I’ve forgotten the maker’s name.

Tho’ no doubt a concentrated Google search will probably find the company for you.

Stephan,

I’m not a surgeon, I just like taking pictures and makes cosmetic changes to see what people will look like. Not funny or weird stuff just normal things as the plastic surgeons software will show. It would be very helpful if I could find a tutorial on something like this (hint,hint………..lol)

I have played around in Photoshop and I can give anyone a "Michael Jackson nose…..lol" but I’m still learning.

Why didn’t you say so in the beginning. We all thought you were some kind of unlicensed butcher or something. 🙂

Just kidding…

Photoshop is just the tool for you. However, you also need to know a lot about anatomy and make-up. Ask a make-up artist to assist you and study anatomy books. And take a good long look at magazines that deal with celebrities. Photos in there are usually retouched heavily. They also represent current trends in retouching of portraits, so they might make a good reference. You might learn about how much of what to apply, and so on.

Personally, I use all the tools available to me in PS, but most often it’s the subtle use of Liquify tool, healing tool, burn/dodge, brush tool, and quick masking.

Thanks for the reply but I have yet found a way in Photoshop to get rid of a double chin, or get rid of the bump in someones nose. I would love to find a tutorial on things like this. I can take a picture and clean it up, I’m talking about making changes in the structure of the face. If you know of a way please give me some pointers

Well, I usually don’t "remove" double chin, since it is a characteristic of a person (i.e, the person is identifies by it).

However, you may use the Liquify tool for the task. Use small brush size and try to experiment with various directions. For example, you may choose to pick up the ‘skin’ just above the indent and pull it downwards, or you may pick up the skin from either side of the indent and drag it horizontally. The pulling I mentioned above is actually also pushing. Effectively, you strech the portion of the image that lay behind the brush tip pushing pixels in front of the brush at the same time.

I don’t think you’ll find good tutorials on this since the process is different from picture to picture. You may try and post an image on the net and ask for advice in this ng. That’s the best way to get up to speed, IMO.

Good luck.

Well, I thought I’d add some more lines to the previous post…

The basic concept is this: highlights and shadows communicate information about the 3D structure of an object. So, by manipulating the image using burn/dodge tools, or copying shadowed or highlighted parts of the image from one place to another gives you means to alter the information about that structure. Of course, there’s no rule as to what tools you’ll use in order to achieve that objective.

To change the contour of the object’s image is a totally different process. For this, you’ll need to recreate parts of the image that are "missing". That can be done by using the healing tool, clone tool or Liquify filter.

Whatever you do, you need to keep this is mind: "It is good only as long as it’s realistic." If you make an anatomically incorrect image, you’ve ruined it. And that happens quite often if you get carried away… It’s a good idea to make all the alteration on a duplicate of the layer you’re modifying and then change the opacity of the modified copy to achieve a more realistic result.

You may e-mail me any questions. I’ll be glad to help.

Just for fun, then you may need some plug-in like Squeeze or similar so you can just use mouse pointer to Push/Pull any area.
