Opening Photoshop CS help file freezes Internet Explorer

I'm currently using the Photoshop CS tryout. Whenever I try to access Help in Photoshop, or any of the options that show up in the Welcome screen like Basics, etc., Internet Explorer will hang. I can't stop IE unless I shut down. Strangely enough, I can still work in Photoshop itself while this is occurring.

This only happens if Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect is running in the background. If I disable Auto-Protect, I can open Help just fine.

I suspect it's because of the use of Javascript in the help files because a similar thing happened when I was trying out Kaydara MotionBuilder, which also used an HTML help file. Painter 8's help file also opens very slowly. I think what's happening is Norton is scanning the Javascript.

Is anyone else having this problem? It's not a huge deal if I can remember to shut off Auto-Protect, but sometimes Auto-Protect comes back on even when I disable it.

Hi Cindy,

While unrelated to Norton Protection, since I've seen this occur both with and without Norton Systemworks installed, I have seen problems related to accessing Help in PS CS. But, they weren't quite like yours. In my case it was more frustrating because while Help would open just fine, it was PS that would abort at random times. I never could pin down the cause, even after wiping my drive, reinstalling WinXP, and then only installing PS CS. The problem still existed. My system may be suspect, but I can't imagine what it would be.

I ended up just shutting off Auto-Protect altogether, and that seems to have fixed it. I still suspect Norton is choking on the Javascript.
